Volleyball involves six players in two teams. Teams usually attempt to attack the opponent and defend themselves. The game is played until one team wins by two clear points. Points can be earned by hitting, passing or playing a set. The games usually last three to five sets. These games can be shorter if they are played at an extremely high level.

The attack line divides a volleyball court into two equal sections, or zones. One half of the court is considered the "weak" side. This side is for right-handed spikers. The other half is for lefty spikers.

Each player has a designated role on a team. The front-row is comprised of three people, while the back-row includes three. The front-row jumps in front the other spiker when a spiker touches the ball. To intercept a spiked balls, players can also make use of the "A", the "B", the "C", the "D", or the "Pipe" buttons.

A player must be behind the 3 metre long service line to serve. It is located between the baseline and the end line. Serves can be made overhand or underhand. The serving team has a better chance of winning points if they serve overhand. The 1996 Olympics saw an increase in the area of service to 9 meters.

According to volleyball rules, a ball cannot be blocked by a player if it's being served. The volleyball rules also state that the server may not move on the service lines until the ball has been served.

After the first hit, a player is allowed to hit the ball up to three times. It is considered a foul if the same player hits a ball twice in succession. According to the volleyball rules, one player can only hit the ball once.

Back-row players can attack the ball by hitting it from behind the attack line. This is the line that separates attack and back-row positions. The back-row player cannot block or hit the ball higher than the net. It is also illegal for a back-row player to attack the ball when the ball is on the attack line.

A back-rower serves the spiked balls over the net. If the ball lands on the wall, it can fall in the other half. It is out if the ball hits the wall, on the stand of the referee, or on an antennae.

The volleyball game is over once there has been a point. If the defense makes an error, the offensive team wins. If the defense commits an error, it will be scored by the opponent.

After the point, the players will be rotated around the playing court. Six players are allowed to be on the court at a time. All team rotations must take place clockwise. Three players are in the front row, and three are in the back. There are only two time-outs allowed per set.
